A West Australian telescope has captured a 12.5 billion-year-old 'GRB 140311A' star explosion.

Professor David Coward told WAtoday.com.au that when you look at space, you look back in time and the recording of the gamma ray burst is crucial as it is the oldest image of its kind to be captured, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

The Zadko Telescope, which is operated by the University of Western Australia's School of Physics, is designed to capture flashes in the sky and started recording images after receiving an alert from a NASA satellite.
