Reigning Masters and US Open champion Jordan Spieth has described his near miss in the 144 Open Championship as 'tough to swallow' after his hopes of securing a career Grand Slam were dashed at St Andrews.

The 21-year-old American failed to convert a birdie putt on the final hole that ruled him out of the title contention at the Old Course on Monday.

The world number two said that it is a tough feeling not to win the title after coming that close in a major, pointing to his missed chances in the final round, the BBC reported.

Zach Johnson claimed his second major by finishing a shot ahead of South African Louis Oosthuizen and three above Australian Marc Leishman over four extra holes.

An additional four-hole play-off was required to decide the winner after all three finished at 15- under 273.
