The Department of Sports on Monday recommended Saina Nehwal's name for the Padma Bhushan to the Ministry of Home Affairs, adding that despite the last day of nominations being long past, it has made a special case for the badminton ace.
The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, in a statement said that after receiving Saina's nomination from the Badminton Association of India, it forwarded her name to the Home Ministry, overlooking the fact that the last day for nominations was September 15, 2014.
The statement further said that the ministry had not received nomination in respect of Saina Nehwal from the Badminton Association of India or any other agency. The ministry also categorically denied having received any nomination with respect to the Olympic bronze medal winner last year either.
