Microblogging site Twitter reportedly sent emails to thousands of its users, prompting them to change their passwords, but later clarified that the emails were sent accidentally.
The password-reset emails were sent to users, sparking rumours if the service had been hacked.
The emails came with a warning saying that user accounts might have been compromised by a website or service not associated with Twitter and that the site has reset the passwords to prevent access to the accounts, the BBC reports.
According to the report, Twitter blamed a 'system error' for the emails; however, those who received the notice would still need to reset their passwords.
Cybercriminals and hacker groups like the Syrian Electronic Army (SEA) have been long associated with exploiting the platform for tricking users into unwittingly giving out their log-in details.
