Two Italian aid workers who were taken captive in Syria by the al-Qaeda affiliate al-Nusra Front more than five months ago have been freed.
According to the BBC, Greta Ramelli, 20, and Vanessa Marzullo, 21, had been working on humanitarian projects when they were abducted in July 2014 in the northern province of Aleppo.
Following their release, the pair flew in from Turkey and was greeted by Italy's foreign minister as they arrived at Rome airport early on Friday.
The report said that rumours were rife that the women were freed in exchange of a ransom worth up to 15 million dollars.
The duo has met anti-terror prosecutors, who have opened an investigation into the abduction, the report added.
