Ukrainian government and pro-Russian separatists have signed a ceasefire agreement that is expected to put an end to the five month long fighting in eastern Ukraine.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko recognized the need for a truce agreement and said that political dialogue will continue to stabilize the situation in Russia and Ukraine.

The separatists, however, said that the agreement had not changed their policy of separation from Ukraine.

The two sides agreed upon the deal at 15:00 GMT, reported the BBC.

At least 2,600 people have been killed in the violence since the pro-Russian separatists entered the country.

Western countries have constantly accused Russia of arming the rebels in eastern Ukraine while Russia denies all allegations.
