American singer-songwriter Madonna paid a tribute to singer Aretha Franklin who passed away last week at the age of 76. Giving a speech at the MTV Video Music Awards, the 'Evita' singer said how she owes a major part of her career to Franklin. "Aretha Louise Franklin changed the course of my life," she said.

Narrating a personal incident, Madonna said that in her early 20s she auditioned before two French record producers and sang Franklin's hit '(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman' which helped launch her music career, reported E! News.

The 60-year-old added, "None of this would have happened, could have happened, without our lady of soul. She led me to where I am today. And I know she influenced so many people in this house night. In this room tonight. And I want to thank you, Aretha, for empowering all of us."

Franklin died at her home on August 16 due to a pancreatic neuroendocrine tumor.

The 2018 MTV VMAs were broadcasted yesterday.

The show opened with performances by Cardi B, Ariana Grande, Nicki Minaj, Travis Scott, Post Malone, Logic and Ryan Tedder and Jennifer Lopez, who became the first Latin artist to receive the MTV 'Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award'.
