Kharif Acreage Down 1.7%, Good Gains In Area Under Oilseeds

According to kharif crop sowing data released by the Agriculture Ministry, a total of 855 lakh hectares (lh) has been brought under cultivation till 3 August 2018 as against an area of 870 lh covered during the corresponding period last year - according for a decline of 1.70%. The broad sowing is on a recovery path though. Acreage under rice stood at 263 lh, down 4.17% over year. Acreage under Pulses stood at 74.89 lh, down around 4% over year. Urad area is down 11.30%. Area under oilseeds is at 157 lh, up 5.78% over year with the acreage under Soybeans jumping 10.60% to 109.5 lh. Sugarcane acreage is up 1.46% to 50.59 lh while Cotton area is down 4% to 109.79 lh.
