An 11-year-old boy died after falling into a rainwater-filled pit in the Rohini area in north Delhi, police said on Wednesday.

Abdul Khalid, a fifth grader of Mangolpuri area, was playing with his friends in the DDA District Park in Avantika when the accident occurred around 5 p.m. on Tuesday.

When he failed to return home, his father Mustaq went looking for him around 7 p.m. and found he had drowned.

"His friends knew he had fallen into the pit, but didn't tell us. It was only around 7.30 p.m. that they told me about the incident," Mustaq told IANS.

Mustaq along with one of Khalid's friends went to the park and fished out Khalid, and rushed him to hospital where he was declared brought dead.

"A case has been registered and autopsy done. Prima facie, it appears to be a case of drowning," Deputy Commissioner of Police Rishi Pal said.
