At least 21 people were killed and 60 others injured Tuesday in a suicide car bomb attack targeting security forces in the Iraqi capital, an interior ministry source said.

A suicide bomber drove an explosive-laden car into a security checkpoint at the entrance of the Shia neighbourhood of Kadhmiyah in the northern Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity.

"The latest reports said that 21 people killed, including security members, and 60 others wounded, many in critical conditions," the source said.

Iraq has been witnessing some of its worst violence in years.

Terrorism and violence have killed 5,576 civilians and wounded 11,666 others during the first half of the year, according to a recent UN report.
