Afghan police have foiled a gemstone smuggling bid in Nangarhar province and arrested three persons, the Interior Ministry announced on Monday.
"The attempt to smuggle 5,210 kg of precious stones on the highway linking Kabul to the border town of Torkham was foiled," the ministry said.
Torkham is a border town that connects Afghanistan's Jalalabad city with Pakistan's Peshawar, Xinhua news agency reported.
The statement, however, did not identify the kind of gemstones and their prices.
Precious and semi-precious stones such as emerald, ruby and lapis lazuli are routinely smuggled out of Afghanistan.
