Algeria has strongly condemned Wednesday's twin bombings in the Lebanon's capital city of Beirut which killed six people.

"Algeria condemns in the strongest manner the attack that occurred Wednesday at Bir Hassan near the Iranian cultural centre," Xinhua quoted Amar Belani, spokesperson for the foreign ministry as saying.

"In these tragic circumstances, we extend our condolences to families of the victims and reiterate the firm commitment of Algeria to the security and stability of Lebanon," he added.

"We reaffirm our solidarity and full support for the newly formed government and we call on all Lebanese to work for safeguarding national unity and cohesion, and to consolidate the foundation of security in order to defeat all destabilisation attempts targeting this brotherly country," Belani said.

Earlier Wednesday, at least six people were killed in twin suicide car bombings that targetted the Iranian Cultural Center in Beirut, media reported.

The attacks were later claimed by Al Qaeda-linked Abdullah Azzam Brigades "in retaliation to Hezbollah and Tehran's role in the Syrian war".
