The government Wednesday decided to withdraw the Food Safety and Standards (Amendment) Bill which was introduced in the Rajya Sabha in February by the then Congress-led government.

The decision to withdraw the bill in its present form was taken by the union cabinet during a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The Food Safety and Standards (Amendment) Bill, 2014, needs to be further amended after taking into account the judgments of the Supreme Court, the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court, and representations received by the government and other recent developments, an official release said here.

The government will bring in a fresh set of amendments which will be finalised by the health ministry, the release added.
