The central government has sanctioned 2,124 buses for cities in Karnataka and Punjab to improve urban transportation.

The decision was taken Tuesday by Central Sanctioning and Monitoring Committee (CSMC), under the urban development ministry.

"The number of buses proposed to be sanctioned for Karnataka and Bhatinda (in Punjab) stood at 2104 and 20 respectively," an official said.

The government has started the second round of approvals for sanctioning buses to states under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission.

The earlier round of sanctioning buses to the states took place in 2009.
