A square built in the memory of Colonel Girdhari Singh, erstwhile Commandant of the ASC (Army Services Corps) Centre North at Gaya in Bihar, was unveiled at the ASC Centre and College in the city's eastern suburb on Saturday.

The square was unveiled by Centre Commandant Lt Gen Vipan Gupta.

"Colonel Singh, who shifted the ASC Centre to Gaya from Meerut in Uttar Pradesh in 1976, was again instrumental in re-locating it to Bengaluru from Gaya in 2011," said a Defence Ministry statement here.

Colonel Girdhari Singh was recipient of the Ati Vishisht Seva Medal (AVSM) in 1978 for distinguished service.

"A memorial that was set up at Gaya in his honour has also been re-erected here to keep up the heritage," the statement said.

Born on May 2, 1928, Colonel Singh was commissioned on September 12, 1948. He died on February 15, 2012 at the age of 84.
