A "critically ill" doctor diagnosed with Ebola in Sierra Leone has arrived in the US for treatment.

Martin Salia, a native of Sierra Leone and a US legal permanent resident, landed at Omaha's Eppley Airfield Saturday evening, Xinhua reported.

He was then transported to the Nebraska Medical Centre, one of the four hospitals in the US equipped to handle Ebola.

"We have received word he is critically ill -- possibly sicker than any of the other patients transferred from West Africa and treated for Ebola in the US," the hospital said in an update on Facebook.

The evacuation came at the request of his wife, an American citizen, who has agreed to reimburse the government for any expense.

Earlier this year, the Nebraska Medical Centre had successfully treated two patients who also contracted the virus in West Africa.

Eight of the previous nine Ebola patients treated in the US survived.

Only one, Liberian national Thomas Eric Duncan, died of the virus.
