Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated across Tamil Nadu on Saturday with the usual fervour and gaeity.

Thousands of Muslims assembled in mosques and offered their prayers on the festival marking the end of the fasting month of Ramadan, before greeting each other.

In his greetings to Muslims, Governor Banwarilal Purohit said: "Eid-ul-Fitr brings to a close the month of Ramadan during which fasting was practised and marks the beginning of the new month of Shawwal. It is a festival of merriment and joy.

"On this happy occasion let us practise tolerance towards fellow citizens and promote communal harmony in society by adopting the path of prayer, kindness and generosity."

Chief Minister K.Palaniswami and several other leaders extended their greetings.
