Government hikes compensation for quake victims

The government on Sunday announced enhanced compensation of Rs.4 lakh each for the families of the people killed in the earthquake that shook parts of India on Saturday.

Revising its guidelines for the National Disaster Relief Fund, the government on Sunday raised the compensation amount from Rs.1.5 lakh to Rs.4 lakh, in the event of death due to natural calamity.

An official communique said the enhanced monetary relief was in addition to the compensation of Rs.2 lakh from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund for the next of kin of those killed.

A compensation of Rs.50,000 has also been announced for the seriously injured.
