Expanding avenues for foreign language learning for Indian students, the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) inaugurated the Korean language course at the Korean Cultural Centre India here.
The six-month certificate programme -- "Certificate in Korean Language and Culture" -- which started taking student registrations in July, will formally begin classes after the inauguration.
The language, already available as a study option in Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), University of Delhi (DU) and Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI), was termed as part of a "consistent endeavour to promote Korean language in India" by the South Korean Ambassador Shin Bong Kil.
"So far, 800 students have registered from various regions. This course can be taken by anyone who has passed the high school.
The programme fee is Rs 2500. Enrolled students can take this course which provided learning video and audio material, a statement from the Korean Cultural Centre said.
The inauguration was also attended by IGNOU Vice-Chancellor Nageshwar Rao and Korean Cultural Centre India Director Kim Kum Pyoung.
