India, Japan to study high speed train route

India and Japan will jointly undertake a feasibility study for running trains at speeds of 300-350 km an hour on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route, an official statement said Wednesday.

According to the statement, an agreement on the study for the possible introduction of high-speed trains was signed in New Delhi Monday by Katsuo Matsumoto, director of the South Asia division of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), and Girish Pillai, advisor on infrastructure, Indian Railways.

The cost of the study, to be completed within 18 months, will be shared 50:50 between India and Japan.
