Israel's President Reuven Rivlin, 77, underwent an operation to implant a pacemaker after doctors detected heart arrhythmia during a routine check-up, an official source told EFE news on Friday.

Rivlin, elected President in June 2014, was operated on Thursday night and returned on Friday to his Jerusalem residence to resume his activities after the weekend, a presidential spokesman confirmed to EFE news.

The presidential office said in a statement that Rivlin wishes to thank the whole team at the medical centre where he was treated for their care and the Israeli people for their attention and kind wishes.
