A man from Jammu and Kashmir was arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping a Canadian tourist at the beach village of Arambol in Goa, police said.

The accused Alan, who hails from Ladakh, had befriended the 28-year-old Canadian woman on Friday, before raping her the same night, Devendra Gad, police inspector at the Pernem police station, told IANS.

"He met her at the beach and they shared a few beers in the afternoon. At night, he followed her, when she was on her way to her guest house, accosted and beat her up and raped her," Gad said.

The accused, who does odd jobs in Arambol, 30 km north of Panaji, may also be involved in other assaults involving foreign tourists.

Arambol is a beach village extremely popular with European tourists and is located in Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar's legislative constituency of Mandrem.
