Maoists Sunday killed a former village headman in Odisha's Malkangiri district, police said.

The Maoists went to the house of Kamalu Penta in Mangipali village, 700 km from here, took him out and killed him, Superintendent of Police Mitrabhanu Mohapatra told IANS.

Penta, 52, was found dead on the outskirts of the village with bullet wounds. The rebels probably suspected he was a police spy, Mohapatra said.

Maoists are active in more than half of Odisha. Malkangiri is considered one of their strongholds. This is the second such killing in a week.
