Democrat and House minority leader Nancy Pelosi declared that Wednesday will be a new day for the US as her party retook control of the lower chamber from the Republicans in the mid-term elections.
Pelosi insisted that the victory is "more than about Democrats and Republicans. It's about restoring the Constitution's checks and balances to the Trump administration", reports Efe news.
"The new Democratic majority will honour the vision of our founders," said Pelosi in her speech, after rejecting division.
"We have all had enough of division. American people want peace, they want results," the Californian Democrat said.
Pelosi became the first woman in history to lead a major party in Congress, but in 2010 the Democrats lost the majority to the Republicans and she has since been the leader of the minority.
