Two passenger trains collided head on Tuesday afternoon in the eastern region of South Korea killing one passenger, media reported.

One female passenger in her 50s or 60s has been confirmed dead, and dozens of others were wounded, Xinhua reported citing local broadcaster YTN.

The number of casualties is likely to increase because 65 passengers were taken to a nearby hospital.

A total of 103 people were on board the crashed trains.

The trains collided at about 5:50 p.m. local time on the single-track between Taebaek and Mungok stations in Taebaek in the country's eastern Gangwon Province.

The collision is suspected to be caused by signal failure as the two trains collided on the same track. Some passenger cars were derailed after the crash.

Witnesses said a very loud explosion was heard when the trains collided.
