With crores of kanwarias expected to converge here in western Uttar Pradesh, police have reviewed security issues ahead of an annual gathering that will end on August 3.

Uttar Pradesh Additional Director General of Police Daljeet Chaudhary presided over a meeting of officials. He visited Ghaziabad and Meerut on Monday night and inspected the control room on National Highway-28.

The kanwarias will bathe Hindu god Shiva's statue here with water they bring from the Ganga river in Haridwar and other places in containers carried on their shoulders.

As many as 2-2.5 crore kanwarias from Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan and other places are expected to converge for the event that started on July 19 and will end on August 3.

Uttarakhand may contribute another 3.5-4 crore kanwarias, Chaudhary said.

The Chaudhary Charan Singh Marg on the Upper Ganges Canal has been strengthened and widened.

Officials said plans were afoot to persuade kanwarias to use this route from Haridwar to Murad Nagar, enabling commuters on the National Highway-58 to travel without hassles.
