The US, France, Britain, Italy and Germany have condemned ongoing violence in Libya and demanded an immediate stop of all hostilities.

A statement by the five countries expressed concern over attacks led by General Khalifa Haftar's troops in Benghazi and security challenges facing Libya, MENA news agency reported Sunday.

Terrorist groups must be handled through official armed forces under central authority which is in turn liable to a democratic parliament, added the statement.

The Canadian government has also condemned the resumption of violence in Libya and called on all parties to accept an immediate and unconditional ceasefire, the Canadian foreign ministry said in a statement Sunday.

The Libyan people and their representatives in parliament must commit to the peaceful political path set by UN envoy Bernadino Leon, added the statement.

Canada urged all parties to renounce violence and work for a united government representing all shades in Libya.
