The United Progressive Alliance government's tenure was marked by disrupted parliamentary sessions, especially during its second stint. The Congress had been quick to hold the Bharatiya Janata Party, then in the Opposition, responsible for the rampant disruptions, walkouts, sloganeering and "obstructionist tactics". Now that the Congress finds itself in Opposition, it has been hinting that should it be denied the Leader of Opposition position, disruptions in Parliament cannot be ruled out. The first day of the Lok Sabha was ample proof. The House had to be repeatedly adjourned after the Opposition demand for an adjournment motion on price rise was not acceded to. "After all, the responsibility for the smooth functioning of Parliament lies solely with the ruling party," said Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala by way of explanation.
