Deputy confusion

Congress' international conference to commemorate Jawaharlal Nehru's 125th birth anniversary had a galaxy of former heads of state in attendance. Former commerce minister and senior Congress leader Anand Sharma being the convenor of the organising committee was among those present on the dais. So when former President of Ghana John Kufuor, in his address, mistakenly referred to his old friend Anand Sharma as the "Deputy Chairman of the Congress party", several amused glances were exchanged by everyone present, including those in the audience. For the record, Sharma is the Deputy Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, a title so complicated to an outsider that Kufuor can be forgiven for the contretemps.
