Business Standard New Delhi
Martina Navratilova, arguably the greatest woman tennis player, got into a Twitter spat on Monday with self-proclaimed nationalists, who viewed her move to share a New York Times opinion piece slamming the crackdown on Jawaharlal Nehru University students as an "outsider meddling in Indian affairs". The tennis icon had shared a piece written by novelist and Business Standard columnist Nilanjana S Roy. While most asked her to back off, some were particularly vindictive. One @Marut wrote: "Only Yummerikans have the right to be patriotic & nationalist? No wonder, America - land of the stupid & the ignorant!" Navratilova responded with spunk, claiming it was neither seditious nor anti-Indian to disagree with the government. But there was a limit even to her patience, as one @meonsky123 found out when he wrote: "Please first clear your own country then lecture others." Navratilova's response: "You are just nasty - bye." Game, set and match!
