This refers to "India to help Lanka develop civil nuclear energy" (February 17). The new Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena's maiden visit to India soon after assuming office and signing the civil nuclear agreement with Prime Minister Narendra Modi heralds a new era in boosting business and trade relations between the two countries. The agreement, meant for peaceful purposes - including nuclear energy, radioisotopes, nuclear safety, nuclear security, radioactive waste management, nuclear and radiolological disaster mitigation and environmental protection - is significant with China's relations with the island nation burgeoning and the former inching to establish supremacy by way of regional ties with countries in the South Pacific rim.

As allegations of war crimes and human rights violations by successive regimes in Sri Lanka take a toll on the living conditions of people, the vision of both the leaders to give new direction to bilateral ties for a stable and prosperous Sri Lanka is a welcome development.
