Letters: Lessons from Japan

The comments by Anjuli Bhargava in her column "Learning from Swachh Japan" (Out of the blue, April 9) made interesting reading and reminded me of a trip to Japan about 30 years ago. On the hills of Mount Fuji, in between lush green surroundings, my host stopped the car for a break. After enjoying Coke from a can, I threw the same in the jungle. The host was furious. I failed to see any reason behind his anger. After much argument, he could see my ignorance and explained "mother earth does not take this - we cannot throw". This kind of mindset has to be developed in India for becoming swachh like Japan.
