Letters: Questions for Nadella

Image

Business Standard New Delhi
This refers to the report "Microsoft's Nadella sets off furore on women's pay" (October 11). In the corrected version of his controversial remarks about women employees' discomfort in asking for a raise, Microsoft Chief Executive Officer Satya Nadella has advised them to know and have "faith that the system will give you the right raises...." However, it is the responsibility of the organisation to create a culture of trust, transparency, fairness and an objectively-executed reward system, which nurtures such a faith among employees.

And why did Nadella single out female employees to render this counsel, instead of all the employees? Would it have not been better if he had addressed the question of discomfort in a psychological and social context?

Lastly, when he said his lack of tact precipitated the wrong answer, did he imply that he actually holds the stated view about woman workforce but should not have shared it in an open forum? With just 29 per cent women in its workforce, Microsoft has some more questions to ponder.
