Letters: Rahul is still a novice

Rahul Gandhi is still a stranger to political expertise and maturity

With reference to Sunil Sethi's brilliant piece, "Rahul Gandhi's restoration drama" (March 12), it begins on a wonderful note: A yagya was recently held in Uttar Pradesh where Congress loyalists fervently prayed for Priyanka Gandhi to be made the party face for Assembly elections in the state. What was surprising though was their slogan: "Desh mein Rahul, Pradesh mein Priyanka (let Rahul lead the country, and Priyanka head the state)." Really?

Any reasonable person would understand the author's anxiety when he asks, "Is the Gandhi scion ready to take on the bigger challenge of state elections in Uttar Pradesh and Punjab next year -and accept the 'Rahul-for-PM' idea, first mooted by Veerappa Moily, in 2019? At 46, has he finally grown up - or are the new histrionics a mere restoration drama?"

Rahul Gandhi is still a stranger to political expertise and maturity. His journey ahead will be quite tedious. He continues to target Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the plight of the Dalits, the poor, the farmers and the downtrodden. But why didn't Rahul Gandhi - who didn't miss an opportunity to visit the Jawaharlal Nehru University and the University of Hyderabad - think of visiting Haryana where a violent agitation for quota by the Jats was taking place?

Rahul Gandhi's rants about Modi's "suit-boot ki sarkar" and references to "fair and lovely" over the alleged whitewashing of black money are sure to become passe soon.
