Letters: Train officials on GST

Image

Business Standard New Delhi
Sumit Datt Majumder has succinctly brought out the challenges in the implementation of the goods and services tax (GST) in his article, "Finalise technical issues, launch awareness campaign" (August 16).

His stand is vindicated by the revenue secretary expressing concern about possible delay in making GST functional from April 2017 if the GST Council takes longer than expected to resolve various issues.

Apart from what has been pointed out by Majumder, of paramount importance is the need to organise a well-structured training programme by the Central Board of Excise and Customs for state officials on various aspects of taxing intangibles like services. State officials have no experience in this department.Similarly, central excise officials need exposure in taxing goods beyond the factory gate.
