Journalists in Chhattisgarh are worried. Not just because one of their colleagues was murdered in Bilaspur, but the gossip doing the rounds in police circles. The state government transferred Superintendent of Police (SP) Jayant Thorat the day after the journalist was shot dead. This prompt response contrasted sharply with the state government’s previous reluctance to take action against him despite many campaigns for his removal. All of which prompted a senior police official to quip that if you want to remove an SP, kill a journalist.
