On Wednesday, Congress MP from Kaliabor, Assam, Gaurav Gogoi lamented in Lok Sabha that the human resource development ministry under Smriti Irani was eroding the scientific temper in education. He said science was being mixed with mythology; that the ministry was more concerned with things like whether students eat vegetarian or non-vegetarian food or what they wear; that ministers talk about rakshasas instead of satellites and so on. Gogoi qualified his criticism with a rather disarming thought when he saw Irani getting up to protest. Calling Irani the daughter-in-law of Dhubri (a district in western Assam), he said the people of Assam feel that with Irani they have another minister from the state in the Union Cabinet (the other being Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Sarbananda Sonowal). For the record, Irani's maternal grandparents hailed from Dhubri and many of her relatives still live there.
