Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday focused his speech on the need to avoid disruptions and have a healthy debate in the House, while replying on the motion of thanks to the President’s address in the Lok Sabha.

The prime minister quoted senior Congress leaders like ex-PM Rajiv Gandhi and Indira Gandhi along with ex-Speaker Somnath Chatterjee during his arguments.

“House is a place where debates are to take place, but if boundaries are maintained during a debate then it is fruitful. This is what Rajiv Gandhi said. We should listen to elders.”

He also took a dig at Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi. “There are some members from small sections in the opposition who are worth listening to, some are entertainers as well.” Gandhi, on Wednesday, had lashed out at PM and his ministers for inaction on many issues.

Business Standard takes a look at a few things that the prime minister said during his speech in the Lok Sabha on Thursday.

On disruptions

House is a place where debates are to take place, but if boundaries are maintained during a debate then it is fruitful. This is what Rajiv Gandhi said. We should listen to elders

When Parliament sessions are not functional, the nation suffers and more than that the MPs suffer because they can't discuss issues

Parliament cannot work based on inferiority complex

Opposition doesn't let us speak out of an inferiority complex so that the nation can't see our views & skills.

Out of fear for what will be printed in the papers we indulge in "tu-tu-mai-mai"

Mocking Rahul Gandhi

There are some members from small sections in the opposition who are worth listening to, some are entertainers as well

Some people are growing old, but their understanding isn’t

'Poor' Dealing

No one will deny that if Congress would have helped the poor in 60 years, the poor wouldn't still be facing trouble

60 years of running this nation by you (Congress); a result is that we have built the toilets while you haven't

You have planted the roots of poverty so deep that they are difficult to uproot

MGNREGA Report Card

(Mallikarjun) Kharge ji said there is corruption in Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Gurantee Act (MNREGA) and I agree with him. Look at the CAG report of 2012 & what observations were made

MGNREGA has had a history. It has undergone incarnation many times in the past. It was called Jawahar Rojgar Yojana, which the opposition chose to drop 'Jawahar' from its name. It is being by the same party which blames us

Wouldn't need schemes like MGNREGA if past governments had succeeded in removing poverty

Passage of Bills

Bills that are to be passed are for the people. They are for freeing the system from middlemen

It is necessary that executives need to be accountable. No one is less than the PM

I am new, I need co-operation and help to bring development to this nation. Lets work shoulder-to-shoulder

I am saying all this because people must know that Bills have been passed here, but have been stopped thereafter

On Rahul's Babbar Sher jibe

We are mocking things like Make in India. This is for the nation. If there are shortcomings it may be shared & discussed

On GST

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is yours; it is being blocked

Women’s Day

March 8 is the International Women’s Day. On that day, may be only women members speak in the Parliament.

Speaking Out

Why can't we have time set aside where only first time MPs can speak? This will bring a fresh perspective to proceedings

Water, Education

We will have to focus on primary education. Similarly, water conservation is key
