Polling started peacefully at Srirangam, a small temple town in Tamil Nadu, today as voters lined up across 322 booths.
The bypoll was necessitated following the disqualification and conviction of former chief minister J Jayalalithaa in a corruption case.

29 candidates are contesting the election, but the contest will be amongst the AIADMK, DMK, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Communist Party of India-Marxist.
Votes will be counted on February 16.
