Rural Development Minister Gopinath Munde dies in accident

The incident happened at 6:30 am when he was on his way to the Delhi airport

Rural Development Minister and senior BJP leader from Maharashtra Gopinath Munde died today cardiac arrest and liver rupture suffered during a road accident early in the morning. 
 
64-year-old Munde, who made his entry into the Union Cabinet for the first time last week, was on his way to the airport when his car was hit by another vehicle at Prithviraj road-Tughlak road roundabout in the heart of the capital. 

He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead around 7:20 am.

Munde asked for water from his security guard Nair who was sitting in front of the car and told him to take him to the hospital.

Munde was rushed to the AIIMS Trauma Centre by his personal assistant and a driver. Despite all measures, Munde could not be revived and was declared dead. His funeral will take place at his village in Latur tommorow.

Paying tribute to Munde, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Gopinath Munde ji was a true mass leader. Hailing from backward sections of society, he rose to great heights and tirelessly served people."

Munde is survived by his wife, Pradnya, who is the sister of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, and three daughters.

Born in Parali, Maharashtra, on 12 December 1949, Munde entered politics when he met Mahajan during his days in college.

He was Leader of Opposition in Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha from 12 December 1991 to 14 March 1995.Munde was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra when Manohar Joshi-led government took over the reins of the state on 14 March 1995.

Munde won 2014 Lok Sabha election from Beed Constituency by a margin of 2 lakhs.

National flag will be flown at half mast in Delhi, state capitals and Union Territories today as a mark of respect to Munde.
