The Impresa Awards, the event instituted by the Indo-Italian Chamber Of Commerce and Industry (IICCI) in 1999, gives recognition to enterprises strengthening trade and commerce between India and Italy and was held in Mumbai last evening. “Impresa” is the Italian word for “Enterprise”, and the Awards are given to companies which have shown a commitment in specific fields as environment, social impact and innovation.
This unique & exclusive event salutes Indo-Italian ventures engaged in trade, industrial activities or consultancy services. There are five categories and participants are judged according to the criteria of Social Impact, Environment, Innovation, Market Presence, & Business Excellence. The winners in each category are:
Social Impact: Criteria: improving the welfare of employees and community at large
Winner: Guala Closures
For their numerous CSR initiatives that went beyond their call of duty to do social work, the winner of the Impresa Award 2010 for Social Impact is: Guala Closures. They associated closely with the community and shared the benefits from the success of their business enterprise for its betterment.
They provided technical training to the youth, classrooms to the village school, school uniforms & books to needy school children, housing facility to needy women of the village, actively participated in the pulse polio immunization program and also extended financial assistance for setting up of a Management Institute in their town. The award was received by Jerome Nogueira, Deputy General Manager, Guala Closures
Innovation: Criteria: adopting cutting-edge technologies to reduce costs and increasing the efficiency of products made
For their strong culture for innovation that has seen them adopt cutting edge technology for enabling the designs for increasing efficiency of a wide range of products, the winner of the Impresa Award 2010 for Innovation is ST Microelectronics. Their advanced R&D centre at Greater Noida and Bangalore – their biggest outside Europe, has worked towards the generation of valuable IP by ST India that has filed over 600 patent applications worldwide, with 300 original inventions of which 150 have already been granted.The award was received by Mr. Vivek Sharma, Regional Vice President, ST Microelectronics
Environment: Criteria: sensitivity to the impact of an enterprise on the environment and community
Winner: Magneti Marelli Powertrain
For adopting innovative solutions to use renewable energy with technologies drawn from India and Italy, to protect the environment and their strong commitment to environment, health and safety, the winner of the Impresa Award 2010 for Environment is Magneti Marelli Powertrain.
Their plant in India uses solar cooling, solar lighting, photovoltaic night light, eolic air extractors and a Building Management System that allows it to effectively save energy. With a system for rain water harvesting, use of special glass windows to reduce the need for air conditioning and a program for waste management, the company clearly shows its commitment towards safeguarding the environment while doing business. The award was received by Mr. Rino Rocchelli, Managing Director, Magneti Marelli Powertrain
Market Presence: Criteria: strength in sales, distribution and after sales-service
Winner: Future Generali India Life Insurance
For bridging the last distribution mile and increasin consumer awareness about financial and insurance needs through their strong network, the winner of the Impresa Award 2010 for Market Presence is Future Generali India Life Insurance. With only 2 full year operations the Generali Group has established itself as India’s largest and fastest growing retail group while it competes with well established older players in the sector in India. Their multi-pronged distribution structure, and the Mallassurance TM – their flagship distribution channel have seen them cross INR 3000 Mn. For 09-10 and poised to reach INR 7500 Mn in the next fiscal, making them the fastest growing start – ups since the industry opened up. The award was received by Mr. Deepak Sood, CEO & MD, Future Generali
Business Excellence: Criteria: in the face of a global economic slowdown, improvising strategy to register significant growth in business with India/Italy
Winner: Maccaferri Environmental Solutions
For having achieved a seven fold growth in a short span of 3 years since their operations began in 2006, the winner of the Impresa Award 2010 for Business Excellence is Maccaferri Environmental Solutions. This growth story becomes even more significant in the face of the global recession. Their advanced solutions in terms of technical superiority to overcome complex civil and environmental engineering problems contributed to the growth of Indo-Italian commercial exchange and at the same time saw the company adopt measures to safeguard and protect environment and involve itself in social welfare. Their performance ensured that their stake holders repeatedly injected share capital that powered their growth even during the economic slowdown. The award was received by Mr. Vikranjit Roy, Managing Director, Maccaferri Environmental solutions
Introducing the Awards, Mr. Narinder Nayar, the President of the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce said, “The desire to further a new culture that acknowledges the need of an ongoing relationship between economic activities and the environment has led to the institution of the ‘Impresa Awards’. Through this award, the IICCI acknowledges and promotes Indo- Italian organizations that can contribute to improving the economic, social & environmental impact of their activities within a framework of sustainable development, environmental respect and social responsibility.”
Winners were selected by a panel of judges comprising eminent Italian and Indian personalities from the fields of business, finance and the media as well as from government and private institutional bodies. The panel which was chaired by Prof. V.H. Iyer, Dean (MPD), Welingkar Institute of Management, Development & Research, also included Mr. Vijay Kalantri, President, All India Association of Industries, Mr. Ranjan Kapur, Director, WWP India and Mr. Mukul Sarkar, General Manager, EXIM Bank.

Founded in 1966, the Indo-Italian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (IICCI) is a non-profit organization recognized by the Italian Government, whose main objective is to promote and enhance trade and economic relations between India and Italy. The Chamber is a member of Assocamerestero, the parent body of Italian Chambers of commerce abroad and happens to be pne pf the largest Italian chambers f commerce abroad.
