The index opened at 5820.67 and during the day it lost ground and closed at 5772.37 points.
The trading volume was Rs 28.36 crore from trading of 19 scrips.
Among major scrips, Blueprint Securities was at Rs 307. Infosys Technologies was at Rs 2332.15 at close.
Larsen and Toubro was at Rs 1172.50 at close and State Bank of India was down Rs 1941.
Reliance Industries gained during the day to close at Rs 697. Tata Steel lost ground to close at Rs 400.95.
