The Punjab Congress has received around 1,600 applications from ticket aspirants for the next year's assembly elections, party sources revealed here today.

"Around 1,600 applications have been received by the state unit," a party source confirmed.

Congress had asked ticket aspirants to submit their applications to the state unit by August 15.

However, the state unit may consider some left out applicants tomorrow as people could not submit their affidavits because of an extended holiday of three days.

Punjab Congress which had faced defeat twice in the last two Assembly polls, had asked ticket aspirants to 'take a pledge' that they would not contest polls on any Assembly seat against the party candidate in case they were not 'chosen.'

Punjab Congress chief Amarinder Singh had said that "winnability" of the candidate would be the "primary criteria" for the distribution of tickets.

However, he assured that deserving candidates missing out on ticket will be accommodated in the government if Congress is voted to power.

Punjab Congress had also asked ticket aspirants to attach the details of two voters including their serial numbers on the voter identity card and mobile numbers from each booth in the Assembly constituency from where they wish to contest.

The polls are due next year.
