12 Asha Kiran inmates selected for Games

In an achievement which celebrates the ability of the mentally challenged inmates of Asha Kiran, 12 persons of the house have been selected for the 1st World Summer Games-2015 to be held at Los Angels, USA in July next year.

Participants were selected by the Special Olympiad-Bharat through a vigorous selection procedure which included a District Level Competition, State Level competitions and finally National Level competitions.

"It is a great moment of honour for Asha Kiran Home for Mentally Challenged. Inmates will be participating in International Event after 15 years. One person had participated in INAS-FID World Athletics Championships in 1999, which was held in Spain," Satbir Bedi, principal secretary (Social Welfare & WCD), said.
 

Bedi also said that Seema and Patto were selected for athletics, Matru for Softball, Kalyani for Volleyball and Cycling, Preeti for Volleball and Basketball, Upender for Vollebal, Ratna, Arti and Rupali for Handball and Phoolan Devi and Sonakhi for Power-lifting.

According to Delhi Government, Asha Kiran Home for Mentally Challenged Persons is the biggest home for mentally challenged persons in India and is at present housing about 900 residents.

"All expenditure for the participation of the residents will be borne by the Special Olympic-Bharat. The participation of Asha Kiran residents in the World Summer Games, 2015 will bring great honour to the country apart from boosting the morale of the residents and will also help in the socialization process," Bedi added.
