12 injured in clash during idol immersion

As many as 12 people were today injured as locals, protesting against being stopped from immersing Durga idols in river Ganga, clashed with police which resorted to lathicharge and firing in the air here.

The idol procession from Dunkinganj village was stopped at Pehti crossing in Kotwali area from moving towards Ganga for immersion as per court orders when locals turned irate and started pelting stones in which eight policemen, including a lady policeman were injured, police said.

Police resorted to lathicharge to control the situation and fired in the air resulting in injuries to four people including one 18-year-old Krishna who suffered gunshot injuries.
 

The injured have been admitted to a hospital from where Krishna who sustained serious injuries was referred to Varanasi hospital, police added.
