162 deaths post family planning operations in 2013-14

A total of 162 deaths post family planning operations were reported from different states during 2013-14, Rajya Sabha was told today.

While maximum 30 death cases were reported in Tamil Nadu, 23 were reported in Maharashtra, followed by 20 in Andhra Pradesh and 17 cases in Bihar, Health Minister JP Nadda said, in a written reply in the Upper House.

Madhya Pradesh registered 13 death cases, Karnataka and Odisha reported 14 and nine such cases, respectively.

West Bengal reported only four deaths while no such cases were found in Punjab, Delhi, Goa and Tripura.

The Centre has laid down standard operating procedures for conducting sterilization services in the country which has been disseminated to all the states and has also sent an advisory to all states for adherence to standard operating procedures.
