Two migrant labourers hailing from Assam's Dhubri district were arrested here for allegedly murdering a 28 year-old woman last month, police said today.

"We have arrested construction workers Kuddus Ali and Alom Badsah Sheikh, both residents of Assam's Dhubri district and both have admitted the crime," East Khasi Hills district SP M Kharkrang said.

He said the duo murdered Shoma Khongwir at a construction site in Demseiniong area of the city and later dumped her body in the Umkhrah river.

Not ruling out rape and molestation, the officer said the motive of the murder, however, appeared to be for gain as she was having a gold locket which was also missing.

Khongwir was found floating in Umkhrah river on July 28 last, a day after she had gone out of her house in the evening to buy mobile top-up recharge for her mother.

One of the accused was arrested last year for molesting a minor at the MPRO construction site.

Police have also urged contractors to verify the antecedents of their labourers before employing them.
