National Conference leaders today sought urgent measures to safeguard the interests of reserved categories in Jammu and Kashmir, and stressed on the need to implement two per cent reservation to Other Backward Classes without "delay" by the state government.

"National Conference had taken a pioneering initiative in providing two per cent reservation to Other Backward Classes, which needs to be implemented without adopting delaying tactics," the Co-Chairman of the OBC Cell of the party Abdul Gani Teli said while addressing the workers at a function at Namai in Katra.

Teli stressed the need for stepping up efforts to ensure economic empowerment, besides emancipation of the Other Backward Classes so that they can play their useful role in the society.

"The OBC youth does not lack talent but the need is to provide them ample opportunities so that they can excel in different disciplines," he said, while recalling the role of Sher-e-Kashmir Sheikh Mohammed Abdullah, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah towards the betterment of weaker sections of society.

The Co-Chairperson also exhorted youth to come forward and benefit from the schemes tailored by the National Conference government. He stressed the need for improving literacy among the weaker sections to enable them in facing the competitive world with confidence.

District President National Conference Reasi and former minister Jagjeevan Lal also addressed the gathering, saying weaker sections of the society deserved a better deal in education, employment and other spheres so that their living conditions are enhanced.
