3 arrested for cloning credit cards of foreign nationals

With the arrest of three persons, Delhi Police today claimed to have busted a gang of cheats which used to clone the credit cards of foreign nationals to siphon off money from their accounts.

Raj Kumar, Vishal Singh alias Baba and Ankur Sharma were arrested by a team of Barakhamba Road police station of the New Delhi District on Wednesday and recovered the machine being used for cloning of credit cards, laptop and a Swift car being used by them.

The incident came to light on Monday when information was received that some persons who used to clone credit card are in Connaught Place area and searching for credit cards swapping machine of any business outlet to use cloned credit cards, police said.
 

"They wanted to withdraw money from the accounts of unknown foreign nationals with the help of cloned credit cards, where in the information of actual credit card are embedded," said DCP (New Delhi) SBS Tyagi.

According to police, the gang used to buy data from hackers through net and then download it onto the laptop. After this, they used to connect the machine used to clone the card (MSR) with laptop and using specific software, they used to transfer data into MSR.

"After transferring the data they used to clone it on the credit cards. Thereafter, they used to swipe it off on swapping machine and transfer the money in the account of the owner of the machine and used to share it 50/50 or 70/30 basis," said Tyagi.

Police laid a trap for them by contacting them through an informer. They were called at Check-Inn Hotel at Babar Road Where, as per the prior briefing the hotel staff allowed Raj Kumar to swipe the cloned credit card and perform a transaction.

"He was asked to come again on the pretext of distribution of money, On Wednesday, Raj Kumar came in front of Check-Inn Hotel along with his associates Singh and Sharma. They were carrying a laptop, card cloning machine or magnetic strip reader (MSR) in a Swift Car.

"They were nabbed swiftly along with the laptop, credit card clone machine, cloned credit cards. Vishal Singh provides the data of foreign nationals. Singh and Sharma were in touch with Nigerians in the commissions of the offence," said Tyagi.
