Three women were killed on the spot and four others seriously injured, when an autorickshaw in which they were travelling collided head on with a van near Uttarbhag area of Baruipur in South 24 Parganas district, the police said.
The dead have been identified as Panchami Mondal, Saraswati Sardar and Sarama Mondal, all aged around 40-years, a senior police officer said.
The women were vegetable vendors and were returning to their homes in Uttarbhag, when the incident happened, the officer said.
Three of the injured were later on shifted to Chittaranjan Hospital in Kolkata after their condition deteriorated, he said.
The driver and helper of the van managed to flee the spot, but the vehicle has been seized, the officer added.
